Speaker Series: An Introduction to Atakapa-Ishak Language and Culture with Jeffery Darensbourg
Dr. Darensbourg will explore the language and culture of the Atakapa-Ishak. The Ishak are an Indigenous people who have lived in southwest Louisiana and southeast Texas since precolonial times. Various organized groups of Ishak exist currently, and while federal agencies have documented the Ishak in the past, no current Ishak groups enjoy federal recognition. Many Louisiana Creoles have Ishak ancestry, causing the group to be known sometimes as “Creole Indians.” The tribe has had a lasting influence on zydeco music, and its language is undergoing a resurgence.
Jeffery U. Darensbourg is a Louisiana Creole and member of the Atakapa-Ishak Nation. Louisiana’s deep histories of ethnic mixing between European, African, and Indigenous Peoples are reflected in both his ancestry and work. He works with words, crafting essays, poetry, academic articles, and public talks intertwining traditional academic research with autoethnography and memoir. Darensbourg has an M.L.I.S. from Louisiana State University, and a Ph.D. in Cognitive Science from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.
Dr. Darensbourg’s presentation is a part of a speaker series titled, Opelousas, Up Close and Personal. The Speaker series is funded by the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities’ 2026 Rebirth Grant and will cover topics pertaining to topics in Opelousas’ rich history. Other presentations in the series cover topics such as the Louisiana Civil Rights trail, the Yambilee and Yamba Celebrations, the Civil War, and local participation in the Civil Rights movement.
