Where We Live:
Opelousas Neighborhoods
Where We Live: Opelousas Neighborhoods documents and showcases Opelousas neighborhoods through the lens of area residents. The neighborhoods have unique names like The Hill, The Brickyard, and The Oil Mill. In 2025, youth and adults have taken pictures, with their phones, of the area they live in. The project magnifies the voices of residents through the unique images they choose to share.
Through 2025, we hosted photography classes that covered techniques such as shooting from different angles, using black and white versus color, and editing.
Project elements:
- Photo workshops in schools and communities
- Community-based photo exhibit
- Map of neighborhoods
- Storytelling through photos
- Creative Workshops responding to the exhibit
Selected photos will be featured in the Where We Live: Opelousas Neighborhoods exhibit on Jan. 24, 2026. The exhibit will remain until May 1, 2026.
